Hosting is an art, and creating an inviting environment for your guests starts with a well-thought-out space. These hosting tips for the home can help you create a space that feels warm, intentional, and welcoming.

CREATE COMFORT AND SET THE MOOD

Whether you are hosting an intimate dinner party, holiday gathering, or relaxing night in with hors d'oeuvres, these are our tips for being the “hostess with the mostess.”

The priority is ensuring your home feels comfortable and welcoming from the moment guests step inside. In order to do that start with the essentials, but be intentional about them.

Begin with seating. Pull chairs slightly closer to encourage conversation, add an extra lumbar pillow or drape a soft throw over the arm of a sofa. If you space allows, avoid lining furniture against the walls, floating seating creates intimacy and connection.

Next, layer your lighting. Turn off overhead cans whenever possible and rely on table lamps, sconces, and soft accent lighting instead. Keep bulbs warm (2700-3000K) to avoid a harsh feel. Dim the lights slightly lower than usual as softness creates instant atmosphere.

Think about the sensory experience:

  • Light a candle with a subtle, clean scent (nothing overpowering).

  • Open a window briefly before guests arrive to refresh the air.

  • Lower the temperature slightly, rooms warm up quickly once people gather.

Small preparations make a space feel effortless:

  • Clear countertops and coffee tables of daily clutter.

  • Set out coasters and cloth napkins before guests arrive.

  • Have a designated place for coats and bags so guests don't feel unsure of where to settle.

Hosting isn't about perfection, its about intention. When a space feels thoughtfully prepared, guests immediately relax.

PLAN THE FLOW AND ADD THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES

Next, think about the flow of the space. When hosting, you want your guests to feel comfortable and at home.  Arrange your furniture to promote conversation and provide optimal “make yourself at home”-ness.

We love a well-curated fancy drink. A mocktail, cocktail, or simple diet coke with extra lemon. If that isn’t your strong suit, your guests can come together over a homemade dessert or charcuterie board. You don’t have to go overboard, just a few thoughtful touches.

Fresh florals, beautiful dish-ware, and ambient lighting are sure to impress any dinner guest. Ultimately, hosting is about making your guests feel at ease and creating an atmosphere where they can unwind, enjoy good company, and feel at home in your space.

At its heart, hosting isn't about elaborate menus or perfectly styled rooms. It's about creating a space where people feel seen, comfortable, and welcome. When your home is thoughtfully prepared-layered lighting, meaningful details, and a natural sense of ease-your guests will feel it. And that feeling is what they'll remember long after the evening ends.
